Review of Love How You Love Me by Gracie Graham

All I wanted for so long was to remember the car crash that killed my mother. Like it might somehow chase away the guilt and grief that followed her death.

But now I remember, and everything has changed.

I should be relieved.

Instead, I’m angry at the world. My mother. Father. And especially the boy who stole my heart and crushed it beneath his palm.

Everyone warned me to stay away from Atlas Scott–the bad boy football star, with a reputation for trouble.

Maybe I should've listened.

But our bond was seemingly unbreakable, forged in the fire of tragedy.

Until it wasn’t, and everything fell apart.

Now the memories that haunt me are so much harder to manage on the heels of heartbreak.

Graham, my best friend, is, once again, picking up the pieces while I search for vindication in all the wrong places.

Because there’s only one catalyst for healing and redemption.

Love.

My Review: 5 STARS

I adored the first book so had to pick up this one and find out what was in store for Mackenzie and Atlas as well as all the other characters. Graham makes you feel like you’re right there watching it all play out and it was an amazing book. I only stopped reading because sleep is not optional, but I adored the characters, I adored the twists along the way and that ending was so sweet, even though the very end makes me desperate to jump into the third book, which thankfully I can as I already have it. Overall a delightful romance with serious themes and sweet characters. Very much recommended!

I watched him, a little sceptical, to be honest. It sounded very much like new age woo, and although I didn't think he was selling me a story, it just didn't sound like something anyone could do. But I watched anyway, because it wasn't like I had anything else I could try.
He kept his eyes on me as his thumb rubbed small circles over the doll's head. I half expected him to start chanting a strange poem or something, but as I watched, I saw a small circle of light on the doll's forehead.
“What was that?!” I asked, pushing my chair forward.

The Trials Of An Indie Author: Flexible Planning

THE TRIALS OF AN INDIE AUTHOR: FLEXIBLE PLANNING

One misconception about being indie is that because you're in charge of your own deadlines, you don't have any. Like you can just not do something by a certain time because it's always something you can move and change. Anyone who's been doing the indie life for a while will tell you that yes, they aren't always hard deadlines, but they're not always moveable or ignorable either.

I learned very early on in my writing and author career that I needed some kind of flexibility when it come to writing and deadlines. I still do, even all these years later. That said, it doesn't mean that I don't have deadlines to adhere to, or that those working with me don't also have deadlines they have to meet. A lot of the time when it comes to hiring professionals, whether that's as an editor or an audiobook narrator, you have to have a deadline for the contract to work.

While I'm not all that strict when it comes to some deadlines, for myself or others, I sometimes have to be and I do not like it. The perks of being an indie author are many, but one of them is being able to choose who I work with and what that deadline will be. But what some people don't realise is it all has a knock on effect. Part of being flexible in your planning and your work is knowing that there has to come a time when you have to set a hard deadline and everyone, yourself included, have to meet it.

Too many times I've seen authors working towards release and getting to the point where they need to really put their butt in gear, but just think they can keep moving that final date and will be done when its done. Now I'm not someone who thinks people should push themselves to breaking point, and I also understand that there ae a myriad of things that will stop people from meeting that first, second, whatever deadline, but eventually you do have to get to a point where you're tough with yourself and the people around you. It's not ideal, no, but it does allow you to know that you will be able to keep on track and meet that final deadline.

Of course I say that and know that not everyone has the luxury, and it is very much one, of being a full time writer. They don't have the time to schedule everything. They have other commitments. They have chronic illnesses and/or disabilities that inhibit what they're able to do. That is all valid, and I again, do not think that you should burn yourself out, or push yourself to breaking point, because of a deadline, but I do think there should be some leeway with your planning.

For instance, I know that I work best first thing in the morning. I also know that I'm not really able to work for longer than four hours. I know that if I need to get a lot of things done, then I need to parcel it all out into chunks that are doable in those four hours. I don't set myself up to fail, and while it has taken me over 20 years to get to the point where I am now, I did so by starting small.

The last thing I want to do is come across like I'm judging people, because I'm very much not. It takes as long as it takes, and that's okay, and I do genuinely mean that, but sometimes you have to weigh up what you're trying to do, and whether or not you're able to do it, and be honest with yourself about it. Everyone works differently, and that's valid, and you gotta do what works for you. Just be aware that when you're working, you gotta make sure that it is actually a way that works for you. No one wants you to burn out, no one wants you to fail, and if you're pushing yourself to breaking point to meet those deadlines, maybe take that knowledge and use it to help yourself later.

Your mileage may, of course, vary. Any questions? Lemme know in the comments.

Review of Lucky In Love by Kimberly King

Kat Ellison is sure she’s the only person on earth whose grandma still flirts with the pool boy. But she’s got bigger problems now that Sam Buxton, Senior Class President, keeps coming around. From the moment she laid eyes on him, she’s had nothing but bad luck, but there’s no getting rid of him. Gram has decided they’re a perfect match and is bound and determined to get the two together. From her baking mishaps at home to mortifying moments in the halls of Honeyville High, Kat’s convinced Sam is a bad penny the way he keeps showing up. But she has a plan: win over recently single Hunter Hayes, convince Gram that he’s a better match, and get rid of her bad luck—and Sam—once and for all. The trouble is her fate is written in the stars. How can she change it when everything keeps bringing her back to the one person she can’t stand?

My Review: 5 STARS

I picked this up because I wanted to lose myself in a sweet romance, and I definitely picked the right book and series to do that with. Kat was adorable, and everything just made you feel like you were right there with her, her Gram, and Sam, with every wrong thing happening to her. I adored the prose, and the setting, King has a way with words, a way to weave them through the plot and bring about relatable characters and nice sweet romance. I especially adored the ending, and all that came with it, and it’s a series I will be continuing. Very much recommended!

The Trials Of A Crime Writer: When Crimes Change

THE TRIALS OF A CRIME WRITER: WHEN CRIMES CHANGE

When I first started writing crime novels, it was 2001, and social media was not a thing. The internet was all about chatting platforms like MSM and Yahoo! and others like that. I don't say that because I wanna be old, and moaning about the youth of today, but to basically explain that over my years of writing crime, crimes themselves have changed. There's things you can do today that just weren't possible back then.

Nowadays, with most teens having access to a phone that has all the apps they need, you can have a lot of different kinds of communication and twists that just wouldn't have been possible when I first started writing. At the moment, I am in the midst of rewriting rather than drafting anything new, and one of those projects is a young adult thriller. The things I have to switch around and change because technology has moved on, allow for me to add new issues to the whole manuscript and make things even more tense and scary. That, in my eyes, can be a good thing. It can also lead to lazier writing, which is what I want to talk more about today.

Crimes using the internet, or apps, or smart phones and the like, they're a lot more common, and no matter what age range you're writing for, though my experience is in YA, you'll find that it's pretty easy to get caught up in all the ways things can go wrong, and these crimes can occur, rather than really thinking about whether or not it's realistic for this thing to be possible.

If, like me, you grew up in the 80s and 90s, you might have seen movies like Hacker and think that it's pretty damn easy for someone to hack into whatever website or system and then boom, twist achieved. Only it's really not simple. Just like it's not simple for a teen to know how to code. They might have some experience with it, when Mx. K was at school, they did computer science which involved a lot of learning how to code on a simple level. But that's not going to then have them going in knowing how to create a working, complicated app. You get my point. People these days have more knowledge, and the chance to learn it at their fingertips, but it's the actual learning and applying that knowledge that can't just come in at the last minute and solve it all.

Crimes have changed. The chances of people knowing how to both pull off these crimes, and not immediately get caught have to be backed up in the narrative. While some people in adult fiction will have the skills and learning behind them to do that, when it comes to YA, which as I said is my knowledge base, there has to be a lot of experience woven into the narrative before it becomes believable. Trust me, people will know if you're making it up as you go along.

So how do you avoid doing something that makes it obvious to your readers that you really don't know the subject? I'm gonna give you some tips on what you need to do.

#1 RESEARCH IS YOUR FRIEND
This one seems obvious because of course you're going to research something that you don't know anything about, right? But you'd be surprised how often people will just google something and call themselves done. I'd advise that you go beyond research and actually try and reach out to people within the field. I don't mean pester them and ask them to read your books and critique it, but approach, respectfully, and lay out your scenario and ask questions. The key here is that some people are going to say no, or not respond, and that's okay. No one owes you their time. I'm lucky enough to have a friend who works in the coding side of things, so I can ask her for things that don't quite make sense for my characters, or for me. It's all about making sure you stay respectful and realise these people have their own things to be doing too.

#2 IF IN DOUBT, DON'T USE IT
If you've done your research and you've talked to someone in the chosen field, and you still don't really completely know if your characters or whatever can do the thing, then just don't use it. It's far better to take a different, maybe easier, route than to put out information that will pull people from the story. Those reading who do know this stuff, they'll know you're wrong, and it will just ruin the whole experience for you. So if you don't know for sure, and if you're thinking it's maybe not possible, then go back to the drawing board and think again.

#3 KEEP IT SIMPLE
Even with crimes changing, and even with the draw to making everything a lot more high tech, the obvious answer is to keep it simple. While yes you can have someone hack into the white house, and then do this cool thing and that cool thing, if they are an everyday person, even a kid, it's just not believable, and also way too complicated if all they really needed to do was something a lot more lowkey and simple. There's nothing wrong with keeping it simple. It helps move the story along, and makes sure you don't stretch the believability of it all.

So yeah, those are my three tips when it comes to crimes in our changing world. I hope this helps and if you have any questions, lemme know in the comments!

Review of Love The Way You Lie by Gracie Graham

Torn between my best friend and the boy who makes my heart beat again, learning the truth might break me…

My entire life changed in an instant.

One violent moment took my mother and destroyed me.

And I can’t even remember it.

All I know is…it was my fault.

Now I’m entering senior year after hiding away from the world as long as I could.

The only distraction I have from the heavy weight of my scars is my best friend, Graham.

He’s been my rock through it all.

But when his cousin Atlas appears…my world suddenly tilts on its already unsteady axis.

Everyone warns me to stay away from the star football player with a bad boy reputation and a chip on his shoulder.

I should…

Yet from the moment I climb on the back of his motorcycle, sparks fly.

Despite all the reasons to keep him at a distance, my need for the truth about the accident drives us closer.

Until the truth destroys everything…

My Review: 5 STARS

I picked this up because I was itching for a series and this sounded like a good one. I adored all the characters and loved the setup, the good girl with the best friend who loves her and a bad boy rocking into the scene and making everything change. I adored Mackenzie, Graham and Atlas. I was rooting for them all and the mystery woven between the words kept me hooked enough to finish reading the book in one sitting. That ending was explosive and I’m so glad I could dive into the next book and not have to wait to find out what happens next. Overall an excellent start and a story, and series I recommend!

My thoughts, as usual these days, were on Lucas. Would he be able to answer all the questions I had? Would he even stick to his promise of keeping my parents out of it? Was that a bad thing? Like his agreement, was it pointing to something untoward? Most tutors wouldn't keep secrets from the people paying them, right? It wasn't like with a therapist where everything stayed confidential unless I was going to hurt myself or someone else, or I was in danger. Tutors didn't have that kind of agreement. So should I be worried that he'd agreed so readily?

19 Years As An Author

19 YEARS AS AN AUTHOR

This time of year always seems to sneak up on me. I mean I remember the day my debut, BLACKOUT, was released like it was yesterday, but it's also been so long that I just forget it when it comes close. It's weird to me to be 19 years from that point. I can remember being desperate to be published, thinking that it would never happen, and while the circumstances surrounding it were far from ideal, that's what made me a published author. It's what allowed me to open doors and go on to release my second and third and so on. So I can't really regret it, if that makes sense.

This time 19 years ago, I was 23, I was sure of what I wanted in life, and I didn't think I would actually get there. I certainly didn't think I'd still be alive to have almost 22 books out in the world. That just didn't compute to me because I was exceptionally sick and there didn't seem to be any chance of things changing any time soon. While I'm still sick, I am also a lot more stable than I was. Life has carried on around me, and here I am at 42, with so many more books than even 23-year-old me could even think of writing!

Normally I talk about the changes in publishing, specifically indie publishing since back then. 2005 was a long time ago and things have come along in leaps and bounds. I have five audiobooks now with more on the way. I have another book being released in October (pre-order here) and I have written double what I have published. It just blows my mind to think about just how far I've come and just how much I did not see this coming.

See, back then I was in and out of the hospital like clockwork. I was struggling. I was trying to keep putting one foot, or wheel, in front of the other, and I really didn't think I would see 30, let alone 12 years more than that! I don't say this for sympathy or pity, I say it because it was my reality. Though anyone wanting to make me an inspiration for surviving all of that, please don't. It's not something I want to talk about in detail and I know it was down to help from doctors, from medical science catching up with things, and from a myriad of different things that I had no control over.

All I could do was keep writing, and that's what I did. From one admission to the next, from one scary thing to the next, I kept writing because that was my escape. It still is in a lot of ways. While I'm more established as an author now, it's taken a lot of time and work and energy to get there. I couldn't have done it without the advent of indie publishing as it is now. I don't think I would have ever really managed to do trad pub. No shade to those who do, because it's a completely valid path, I just don't think I would have the career I have, and the stories I have behind me if I'd gone trad.

That's the thing, I went into writing planning to write ten books. Five would be standalones, and five would be the whole of the DYING THOUGHTS series. I did that. I also wrote more standlones, and the series ended up being eight books. I kept writing. I kept finding new ideas, and I kept trying to move forward because I did not want to be a small time author. I wanted my books to make an impact. Some have, some haven't, some may not until the days when I am really gone, but every book I've released has been a story that had to be told.

Life is something that happens when you don't realise it. I didn't think I would even see five years as an author, let alone 19! I'm hoping that by the time the date rolls around next year, for my big 20, I have even more books, and even more stories ready to be told. I always told myself that I would write until something stopped me or I ran out of ideas. People have tried to stop me, but the ideas keep coming. I have so many more stories to tell, and I plan to tell them to the best of my ability.

Thanks for the past 19 years, your support means more than you can ever know!

Review of A Song Of Salt And Secrets by Amanda Marin

There's one thing more powerful than true love's kiss.

For Corisande Phillips, being a siren has meant living a cursed life, a lonely life—a life plagued by the fear of hurting someone with her deadly song. At Magwitch Academy, she has learned to control her urge to sing … for the most part, anyway.

But when a moment of weakness gets the best of her, Corisande accidentally causes Noah, a student at a nearby prep school, to crash his sailboat, unleashing the fury of the sea—and an ancient goddess who will not be robbed of her revenge. Only Noah's love has the power to save Corisande, but how can he ever learn to care for a monster like her?

My Review: 5 STARS

I picked this up because the blurb sounded intriguing. It was a quick read for me, finished it in one sitting and enjoyed the whole of the story. I loved the characters and the way the world worked. With those opening scenes setting the tone for the rest of the book. It was a cute sweet romance and had me hooked on Noah and Corisande from the start. Marin has a way of making you hooked on her every word, flipping and turning pages until you’re lost in her own siren song, one that makes you not want to put the book down. Very much recommended!

Spoonie Writer: Stretching Your Limits

SPOONIE WRITER: STRETCHING YOUR LIMITS

One thing that is very important when it comes to being a spoonie is knowing what your limits are and sticking to them. It's something I've been told many many times over the years by doctors, physios and friends and family alike. You need to stick within those limits because pushing yourself will lead to a flare, and I know no one wants that.

So with that in mind, I wanted to talk today about maybe not pushing your limits, but nudging them ever so slightly every so often so that you can maybe branch out and see if things have changed and if you can manage more. I do want to stress though that this is very much a nudge, not a shove that has you stuck in bed and regretting your life choices.

I have, over the years, gone from writing every so often, to writing pretty much all the time. I do not, and will never, mean every day because everyone has limits, even healthy and abled people would struggle to constantly write every single day. I mean that while at the time I was doing uni, and while that obviously had a bigger impact on my time, I found that I just didn't always have the energy to do one thing non writing related and then sit down to write even one page.

We all know how I finally got to the point where I am now. I started with just one page a day, and even then I didn't write every day. It allowed me to give that tiny nudge to my body and see just where it drew the line. I went from nudging to write, to nudging to write more. I always stopped nudging for a long while to allow my body time to adjust or flip out, whichever it was going to do, and once I was sure that it could take more, I would give it another small nudge and the same, on and on.

So when I sit here and tell you that I work for at most three hours in one day, you can see how that nudge became a little more and a little more, and now I'm in a place where I'm mostly on track with where I need to be. It's taken a very very long time, and I do not advocate for rushing through it. The thing some abled and healthy people don't get is it's very much a case of the mind, mostly, being willing but the body very much is not. It's not a case of choosing to spend the remainder of my day in bed recharging, but that I need to do that to be able to function.

While, over the years, my health has fluctuated to a point where I don't know where I'll be in six months health wise, let alone a year, I have found my sweet spot and I'm really happy to have done so. It means that I can get the majority of my work down in a month, and still have those days off because those are necessary for everyone, but especially so for spoonies.

So what's my advice? Nudge slow, give yourself a lot of time to adjust, there is not a time limit here, and take it easy. Sometimes you will go backwards, and that's okay. You got this. You'll get there.

Any questions? Lemme know in the comments!

Review of Singularity by SE Anderson

In case of breakup, saving the universe is not a healthy alternative to ice cream.

Freshly single and with more free time than she knows what to do with, Sally Webber thought she was done with aliens, interstellar crises, and planet-saving heroics. But when mysterious texts lead her on a quest to save James Felling's soul, Sally realizes the universe is teetering on the brink, thanks to a time paradox her ex-boyfriend, Zander, unwittingly unleashed in a misguided attempt to play hero.

With her not-quite-dead brother as collateral damage and the higher-dimensional unicorns seemingly on a coffee break from managing cosmic order, Sally’s not just fighting for her own sanity — she's battling for the soul of the universe. Along with her glitch-prone emotional support AI hologram and a rockstar whose career's seen better days, it’s up to them to take on the final frontier: saving the universe from itself.

But as they weave through the fabric of time and space, Sally is forced to confront not just the chaos Zander has left in his wake, but her own place within the cosmos. With every jump, every battle, and every unlikely alliance, she inches closer to a confrontation with the very forces that keep the universe ticking.

Can Sally ascend to a higher plane of existence and knit the fraying fabric of reality back together? Or will the final chapter of her starstruck journey end not with a bang, but with a whimper?

My Review: 5 STARS

I’ve been reading this series since the start and knowing this was the end, after the explosive finale of the last book, I had to know what happened. Anderson has a way of pulling you into the story, keeping you there and shutting out anything else that might distract you. I adore Sally, and all those complicated emotions that she’s going through. This was an amazing end to a brilliant series, and I have to say that if I could give it more than 5 stars, I very much would. The whole series is worth a read for anyone who loves fun sci-fi with all the twists it contains. Can not recommend this enough!
