Final Tally for #JoWriMoGo August 2018

I managed 24 chapters, 109 pages and 61,825 words in August!

Looking forward to September!

Interview with M. L Kacy & Review of Living A Lie

I am delighted to welcome M. L. Kacy to the blog for both an interview and my review of her book - Living A Lie. Here's a little about her.

I have been involved in the indie community for a number of years and have always loved how everyone comes together in support of each other. I love writing and reading, living life with my family, and always coming up with new ideas and putting then in to practice.

Words have a way of healing someone, so I will carry on writing, included events that have happened and taking you all on a journey with me.

And onto the interview!

How long have you been writing?
I have been writing for about 2 years now and published for one.

Do you write in the genre you love to read?
I do, but I also love other genres such as paranormal, thriller etc.

Do you have any favourite authors to read?
There are too many to list, but I do make sure that I read every book they release.

Are you an organised writer or not?
I think I am, I make sure that everything is in the right order, I have folders for everything, and most definitely fact check.

What's your idea of a perfect writing day?
One where I have no interruptions, music is flowing, and words are coming together.

Do you like editing or is it something you loathe?
I edit for quite a few authors, so no I don’t mind editing.

What's your favourite social media? And why?
Facebook has to be my favourite as you’ll find me on there all the time.

Do you do character profiles? If so, why/why not?
My current series is based on my life, so I don’t need character profiles for this one.

Do you prefer ebooks or paperbacks? Why?
I love both, I love reading on my kindle, but also purchasing signed paperbacks for my collection.

How do you plan a book launch?
I have my own promotions service, so it is easier for me to set up a release blitz or blog tour when I need one.

How often do you write? Do you have a schedule?
It would depend on what else I have going on. I wear a lot of hats. I have Obsessed by Books Designs where I edit, format, create covers and trailers. I also own Obsessed by Books Events where I organise signings. I also have my blog Obsessed by Books.

In your early adult years, you think that you know it all. Well that’s how I was looking back on my life. Nearly nineteen-years later, it’s true what they say, you always learn by your mistakes, mistakes make you into a stronger person. Boy, did I make a hell of a lot of mistakes. I never thought that my life would turn out the way that it did. There are only four things that I would never regret, my four beautiful children. They were, and still are, my saving grace, my redemption of sorts. When the darkness became too much, thoughts of them would pull me into the light.

This is my story, it’s not a story that is all sweetness and light. It’s a story of love, regret, devastation, darkness and maybe a little redemption.

So here we are, I shall start from the beginning.
Part One

***Disclaimer- Some of the content in this book can cause triggers for some. Also, contains profanity, erotic scenes and only suitable for readers 18+***
My review: 5 stars
This book is heart-wrenching with the story, not an easy read, but when that has you along the way with the author, wanting to make it better for them. As the story of the author's early years, you have tales of lust, of love, of loss and you can't help but feel for them. You also have the story of friendship and those who stand by your side through anything. It's a story that needed to be told.

Spoonie Writer: Being A Writer Revisited

BEING A WRITER REVISITED

As I sit here writing my blog posts, while nebulising an attack into submission, I realised that it's been a while since I talked about being a writer while also being a spoonie. I know I'm nowhere near the only one, and that's a good thing because I feel like spoonie writers bring about a different kind of character, but that's a talk for another day. The reason I wanted to go over this topic again is because of one I did recently about awkward conversations when being a crime writer (found here). I mentioned there that as someone who has a whole ton of random conversations about crime, I also get asked that question a lot too. You all know the one I'm talking about. It's the one I talked about in that real talk video (found here).

For those of you who aren't spoonies, or who just aren't following, lemme lay it out for you. When you're a writer, you'll get asked a ton by people what you do for a living. When you're a spoonie you get asked the same, but there's a whole different tone to it. This is how it usually goes.

THEM: So, what do you do for a living?
YOU: I'm a writer.
THEM: Oh that sounds cool! Do you make enough to live off?
[This is a really rude question btw!]
YOU: *shrugs*
THEM: So do you work anywhere else?
YOU: No, I'm also disabled/chronically ill/both
THEM: Oh...so that's why you're a writer! You  have nothing else to do with your time. Wish I had time to write a book.
[Also really bloody rude!]
YOU: Well, I do do a lot of work, it's just more about being able to set my own times, days and schedule.
THEM: *no longer listening*

I get this a lot. People assume that because I'm a writer, I work another job, which is a fair assumption to make since the majority of writers do work elsewhere because writing isn't a case of write a book, become a millionaire. However, when you bring your health into it, that's when the tone changes. Suddenly you're no longer a serious writer, you're someone with too much time on your hands and you "play" at writing. It's not a real job to you and therefore isn't valid as an actual occupation. And I have to say, it really grinds my gears when people make this assumption.

I mean, I know I'm not alone, and I know it's not limited to spoonie writers. I watched an awesome video about the things people say and questions they ask when they find out you're a writer (can be found here.) But when it comes to spoonies, the implication is that because we're also sick and unable to work a conventional job that we are, somehow, not really writing but playing a game that the grown-ups let us play. Like seriously? I'm 36 years old, I've written a ton of books and a few weeks ago I celebrated having been published for over 13 years. I'm an author. I'm a writer. And no one can tell me otherwise.

Remember that, and along with the rude questions of money issues, remember that you're valid no matter how you write. Whether you take years or months, whether you also manage to do some outside work as well. You are a writer. You are valid, and your stories are needed. Keep writing. It's gonna be worth it in the end.

Review of Forever Disguised by Annie Woods

Erica Lindell would give anything to turn back time. To get a second chance to make the right decisions. To undo the devastating mistake that ruined everything. Left heartbroken after the loss of the love of her life, Sasha aka Prince Alexandre, Erica has to find a way to pick up the pieces of her shattered heart and live with the consequences of her actions. But finding the strength to go on with her life is not all she has to contend with. Soon, Erica finds herself in the midst of the evil feuding behind the attack on Sasha and she has to fight to protect herself and all that is near and dear to her. Amongst all of the confusion, pain and hurt, Tyler proposes a solution that may solve all of her problems. But will Erica go through with Tyler's crazy scheme? The much-anticipated second book of the Angelheart Saga Trilogy is another enchanting, heart-wrenching story about the mistakes made in the name of love, full of drama, passion and surprising twists.

My Review: 5 stars
I loved the first book, and this one was amazing! Well worth the wait to read it. It picks up almost instantly after the end of First Comes Forever and you're thrown into the angst and sorrow Erica feels, along with the issues she's facing. I loved the way the book pulled you in and had you desperate for more. I adore Erica. She's smart and witty, loyal and kind, and although she has lots thrown at her, she stays true to herself. I loved the relationship between her and Tyler, and as the book drew to a close, I was left wanting even more! Very much loved this book and can't wait for book three! Highly recommended!

13 Years Published - The Creative Process

13 YEARS PUBLISHED

When I think back to July 2005, the wait for my book to go live, for the paperbacks to come through my letterbox and me be able to officially say that I was a published author, it feels like a lifetime ago. The fact that it's been thirteen years almost seems unreal because so much has happened, but also it feels like so much longer. I was 23 when I was first published, I'd written, I think, up to Lynne & Hope. I think actually I was in the process of finishing that book when I finally got the contract. I knew that I was going to have to keep writing even after I got flooded with rejections because I just couldn't stop. I had too many stories to tell and, at the time, not even hours in the day to tell them.

I look at where I sit now, with twenty-two books finished, thirteen out on shelves and three due for release in 2019 and it blows me away. When I first got my contract my goal was ten books. I didn't think beyond that because to me, ten seemed like this huge number that I would never reach. And it took me a long time. I did not write to the level I do now. It would take me a good couple of years to finish a book, and even when I started writing two at the same time, it still took me that two years or sometimes more, to get the words out. It really has only been the last couple of years that my productive side has increased.

The date Blackout hit the shelves turned out to be a good one for me. August 10th 2005 was the start of my career. It was also the day in 2003 when I finally got the flat I lived in, and then again in 2009 that we moved into this house. It brings about good things for me and knowing that it has now been thirteen years since that date just blows my mind. I think of how proud I was finishing my tenth book, and then I remember just in December, that I wrote the last words of my twentieth book. Like how did this happen? I know how I got here, I know it took a whole heap of blood, sweat and tears and I am still just as grateful as I was back then.

When I started writing stories, I dreamed big. I still do, though of course there is a more realist side to me. I know that the chances of making it to J K Rowling status is small, but I have my fans, and my readers. I have my followers who will always pick up whatever I write. I have the people behind the scenes, my editor, my proof-reader, all my beta readers and CPs. I have my friends who have always been my biggest supporters, and I have my parents who have also mostly believed in me. But on top of that, I have the knowledge that I am doing what I was meant to do. While I may have, briefly, dreamed of an author life as a teen, it wasn't my end goal. Life brought me to this point and I know I worked hard to get here.

Yet looking back, I can't see how I could've gone another way. Yeah, maybe if I hadn't gotten sick I would've stuck to my original goal, but if I'm honest, I don't think it would've been my goal had I not been sick in the first place. For those who don't know, when I was a little kid I always wanted to be a doctor. It was part of being in and out of hospital with my lungs and wanting to give people what I felt was missing. Yes it wasn't, completely, my lungs that stopped me from working in a regular job, but I think even without knowing how things could've gone that writing was always going to be something I excelled at and enjoyed. It was my fall back plan, but yet soon became my default, the way I thought and looked at the world. My love of books never changed that and never could.

I like to do advice pieces on the blog, give my spin on things and see about helping other people who, like me, started with just the spark of an idea and found that the traditional route wasn't for them. But I also like to look back on what I've learned and how far I've come. So today, that's what I'm doing. It's been thirteen years and yet I know the next twelve months will be gone in the blink of an eye, so I'm going to make them count. Roll on fourteen and the next and the next. I've got stories to tell and I ain't stopping for no one!

Review of Restless Storm by Jamie Summer

Imagine losing everything you loved. Could you go on?

After her father’s death in an unexpected storm, Madeleine Core knew she needed to leave her home behind. The island of Crystal Cove, surrounded by the very element that killed her only family, reminded her too much of the things she lost. Not even one special person could convince her to stay. Now, two years later, a devastating phone call changes everything.

When a storm threatens to destroy the only place that feels like home, Jake Barron knows he needs to do everything in his power to protect the people who saved him. Including Maddy, the one who left him—and everyone else on this island—and never looked back. Seeing her again after two years brings back painful memories for both of them, the betrayal and hurt as fresh as the unresolved feelings they have for each other.

Maddy is forced to go back to the one place she vowed to never see again—and face the person she left behind without so much as a word. As the deadly storm moves on Crystal Cove, Maddy and Jake try to find a way to fight their fears and doubts. Sometimes two people determined to stay away from each other need a push, but what if their second chance is just as restless as the storm blowing in?

My review: 5 stars
I have fallen in love with the way Summer tells a story. I picked this up because I'd read her other works and loved every part of them. The same can be said for this, a heart-breakingly tender love story that comes from a place of pain, recovery and just plain love. I was on the edge of my seat throughout the book, wondering if Maddie and Jake would be able to make it work. The book is told from dual POV and I loved every second of it. Highly recommended!

The Trials Of A Crime Writer: Awkward Conversations

AWKWARD CONVERSATIONS

This has been a piece sitting on my to-do list for a while, but it's really only been recently that I've had a chance to think about firstly what it means, and secondly, how to transfer that into text. It feels like something best left to talking, but I am a writer, and therefore I've decided to keep trying to transfer what I mean to the written word. As a crime writer, I've had a lot of awkward conversations, and I'm betting that you can probably guess the majority of them. Writing life is a whole hashtag on Twitter and along with Writer Problems, you can find some good snippets of what it means to be a writer and what it means to have people ask what you do for a living.

I'm sure you've all been there, while dinner parties aren't really something my generation does, we do have the formal and informal get togethers where you start talking to strangers and they ask what exactly it is you do for a living. Now I have the added bonus of having to avoid answering the question that usually precedes that and I'll leave that for a whole different blog piece. For now I'll focus on the conversation that comes along when you say you're a writer. I'm sure you've all been there. It usually goes something like this.

THEM: So what do you write about?
YOU: Generally I stick in the crime genre
THEM: Oh, so like serial killers and the macabre. Things like that?
YOU: Yeah, the darker side of humanity and all of that jazz.
THEM: *makes a face* doesn't that get rather depressing?
YOU: No, I actually enjoy thinking up new ways to commit crimes and get away with it. It's quite fun actually.
THEM: *nervous laughter*
YOU: Plus, it's all about putting the pieces together. I'm not actually committing the crimes after all. I'm picking up the pieces afterwards.
THEM: *stares at you*
YOU: But anyway, do you read crime?
THEM: Yes, but I could never enjoy it! *backs away slowly*.

I'm sure you can work out just how many different ways this conversation can go. I've done it multiple times. People either get really interested and actually look at you like you're interesting, or they look at you like you just suggested cannibalism and acting out various crimes right there and then. That's the thing when you're a crime writer, you think about crime. Whether that's about, as I said above, how to carry it out and get away with it, but also how to catch someone. Where the mistakes can be made, how to weave in plot points and bring around the ending that you want. You have to think not just about the crime itself, but the pathology that goes into it. It's a dark subject yes, but as I've said before, it's something that needs to be written about.

So, if you're like me, you'll find that the majority of your friends and family avoid talking about work. That's for those who them who don't want to know about the weird and wonderful ways your brain makes the connections, and then there's those who just don't want to be thinking about the dark sides of fiction. Now I personally love a good crime novel. I've grown up reading them from a young age and they always appealed to me. These days if I'm not thinking about crime, I'm reading it. But I guess what I'm trying to get across here is that it's normal to have those awkward conversations. It's part of being a writer.

There are, of course, the other group of friends and family who actually completely get why you love the genre and you can often be found huddled together at these kinds of gatherings discussing the many different ways to commit a crime and get away with it. It's great when you find these people. I often find myself drawn to those who also love a good mystery because we're like-minded and we completely understand that while crime itself isn't always a good thing, there's something to be said for telling a good story. Even when that story involves death, destruction and all those dark features. It's part of the human condition and I'm happy to admit that I'm a bit of a crime-addict. Not ashamed of it either. Your mileage may, of course, vary.

What about you? Do you have any awkward conversations to share? Let me know in the comments below!

Review of Waiting On Forever by Taylor Delong

Brayden Tanner wasn’t my first love, but he should have been my forever. Until one night that ruined it all.

Falling in love with Brayden was easy, despite the tragedy we faced that brought us together. My life was all planned out, or so I thought.

Now, home for a town wide celebration has me dreading a guaranteed encounter with the boy I left behind so many years ago. Knowing I can’t escape him nor the memories of what happened between us, I’m forced to confront the truth of why I left.

The spark that ignited years ago never dimmed, but are we too late? Does our relationship deserve a second chance or will we still be waiting on forever?

My Review: 5 stars
I picked this book up thinking it would be a great romance, and it delivered! I loved the dual POV, with Claire and Brayden both delivering a different feel to the story. I was urging them on from the first few chapters and found it a brilliant read. I loved this book and loved the way the story was told. Brilliant love story and overall just amazing. Recommended
